“Managed” because they manage your cloud hosting instances hosted on DigitalOcean, Amazon AWS, Google cloud or any other host for that matter. We tried to manage our DigitalOcean instances using both the services. Hence, this blog details our experience regarding the same.

Cloud Hosting Background

As the hosting industry evolved, Amazon shook the world over by launching one of the biggest hosting service and that too on cloud. One of the major ground breaking innovation that Amazon did was that it reduced the pricing from a fixed cost basis to pay per use. This drastically reduced the cost of web hosting for the people looking to start a business online.

Amazon was followed by many other cloud hosting providers including but not limited to DigitalOcean, Google Cloud Hosting, Rackspace etc.

Operating a cloud hosting platform like Amazon AWS can be a bit overwhelming. If you are not a technically savvy individual or lets say if you just want to get up and running quickly, it might not be easy. Thankfully, Managed Cloud Hosting providers come to your rescue at that time.

So, we shall discuss two prominent managed cloud hosting providers Cloudways and ServerPilot.

Cloudways vs Serverpliot:

Now, let’s analyse Cloudways and ServerPilot in terms of Ease of Use, Pricing, Speed, Customer Service and of-course features:

1. Ease of Use:

We started setting up a simple DigitalOcean WordPress application on both Cloudways and Serverpilot.

Setting up Serverpilot the first time was just a breeze. You just set up your account for free on Serverpilot. Connect your server and get started with Serverpilot there and then itself. No frills attached.

On the other hand, it was a 3-4 step process to just setup a trial account on Cloudways. You signup your email, verify your email and are mandated to chat with a customer to just get your account activated. That’s like asking a bit too much from a trial user.

Therefore, setting up an app on the Cloudways hosting is much quicker as compared to Serverpilot. So, Serverpilot requires at least root password of your server or technical expertise to setup a username Serverpilot. You can setup many apps with both the Serverpilot and Cloudways. The choice of apps you can setup on Cloudways and Serverpilot is restricted to PHP as of now.

2. Cloudways and ServerPilot: Pricing

Serverpilot provides a FREE pricing tier which helps you evaluate and dry run the applications before running on the hook for the paid plans. So, the FREE plan is free regardless of the number of applications or servers you run on serverpilot.

Cloudways pricing starts from 10 USD per month. Cloudways does offer a free 15 day trial version that you can use to test the cloudways console around. Their most popular and best plan is priced at 42 USD per month or $0.0583/hr that includes RAM = 4GB, Processor=2 core, with 80GB storage and 4TB of bandwidth. Isn’t that really attractive?

But wait, here is the catch!! The servers in serverpilot are billed separately by the hosting provider to you. Hence, in cloudways the pricing of the server is built into the plan. Since, you never need to have your own hosting account with Cloudways. This is a very important factor to consider while evaluating both the services. So, carefully analyse the final cost that will come to you before boarding the ship .. 🙂 !!

3. Cloudways and ServerPilot: Speed

While both cloudways and serverpilot are services on top of other hosting providers. But, Cloudways comes with optimisation stack like Varnish, memcached, redis installed on the server. This is in contrast to the Serverpilot where you have to install and configure Varnish yourself. Now, if you are not that tech savvy, this might seem to be a bit overwhelming for you.

However, both these services continuously monitor and upgrade the server stack to the latest available stack.

4. Features

As Server management apps, both serverpilot and cloudways must have best product and easy to use features for their users.

So, here is a snapshot of feature comparison that can help you in deciding:

  • In Serverpilot, the server belongs to you. So, you need to have it running on your hosting provider. As a result, you have all kinds of access to the server including the root access. But, root access is not there in cloudways hosting and that’s how it is built to be.
  • The overall layout of Server pilot is such that it requires a bit of technical knowledge. Cloudways is built to be a good option for less tech savvy users.
  • With Cloudways you can have access to a bit more applications than serverpilot. But, just see if you are looking for the applications that are in cloudways only.
  • The infrastructure optimisation stack for cloudways is much more advanced. It is built by default into the application. On the other hand, you might need to do quite a bit of work by yourself on the server with Serverpilot.
  • Backups is one of the most glaring features that is missing with Serverpilot. With cloudways, the backup functions are well managed. You don’t need to have even a small technical expertise to back your server up.
